Experience Review:
From the moment we embarked on Cabo Adventures' Whale Watching Photo Safari, we knew we were in for a treat. Opting for a smaller boat, we experienced the majesty of whales up close, an experience far surpassing the larger luxury options. The bilingual tour catered perfectly to our diverse group, blending English and Spanish in a seamless narrative that enriched our understanding and appreciation of these magnificent creatures with charts and graphics. At one point in the tour they throw in an underwater microphone to see if they can hear anything, and if not, they will play a recording. Nothing additional is included in this tour, but honestly, nothing else was needed, it was incredible as it was.
The speed of our vessel demanded attention to securing personal items—a small trade-off for the intimacy and excitement of our journey. Despite not being promised, the breathtaking view of the Arch of Los Cabos graced our expedition, adding a picturesque backdrop to an already mesmerizing experience.
The highlight, undoubtedly, was the proximity to the whales, observing their grandeur up close and being serenaded by their songs—a moment of pure magic. This magic continued as we reviewed our GoPro footage at home, revealing crystal-clear visuals and the enchanting sounds of whale communication! I can’t emphasize enough how incredible it was, and nothing I can say will explain what it feels like sufficiently. If you want a sneak peek of some of the videos we took, you can find a clip here. This is a must-do (and that goes double if you have a waterproof camera)!
You can read more about Cabo Adventures overall below, but I’ll repeat some essentials here—yes, there are cheaper options, more combo options, more of everything—if that is what you want, you will find it. With Cabo Adventures the price is that you’re paying for infrastructure and forethought around your experience. There are food options, air-conditioned seating areas, bathrooms, all those things you don’t want to have to figure out in an unfamiliar place where you will be offered anything and everything you could want or not (come prepared to say “no, gracias” and be polite, people are trying to live!). Cabo Adventures is the “let the tour guides worry about it, not me” option that is reliable because they have to maintain a large system and business if they want to sustain it in such an incredibly competitive environment. I would tour with them again, and I will cherish this experience for the rest of my life.
Key Takeaways:
Underwater Cameras: If you have a waterproof camera, I highly recommend to bring a strong, long handheld stand to put underwater off the side of the boat. Do not do this if you are told not to at any point, and do not do it near the front or back of the boat for safety purposes. The tour is not responsible for you losing your camera! Also make sure to rinse it afterward, as the Cabo area water is extra salty (one of the many reasons the whales are there, it’s easier for the young to swim) and therefore extra corrosive.
Prepare for Speed: Ensure all belongings are secure to fully enjoy the thrilling ride. I know people say that, but I mean it—don’t have things loose, tie down extra clothes, and if your hat isn’t partially cutting off circulation levels of tight, it isn’t tight enough.
Dress Smartly: Sunglasses and hats are essential but, again, make sure they're secure against the boat's speed. Sunscreen is critical, as the boat is not covered.
Embrace the Moment: The close encounters with whales are profoundly moving, making this tour an unforgettable experience. The whales are not a danger to you, so remain calm!
